"Flunking Sainthood"

my take: What's not to love about a self-depricating woman? Jana Riess says in the preface, "I am going to fail at every single practice I undertake in this book." I love her! I fail at so many things, it's refreshing to hear/read that someone else with high ideals gets shot down to reality.

It reminded me a little bit of The Happiness Project where Gretchen Rubin set out to try a new habit or two a month. Jana sets out to read spiritual classics and attempt a different spiritual discipline each month.

Like Happiness and Geography of Bliss, it's a nice blend of the author's research and experience ... knowledge and stories. a good recipe for non-fiction.

my source: Festival of Faith & Writing ... I sat in on a session where Jana was chatting with another author about the philosophy of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Mmhhmm. Really. She's hip and funny and I knew nothing of Buffy.

my verdict: Good spiritual information & inspiration ... after reading I'd decided to take up a new practice ... and then forgot ...

  1. I do love this recipe for non-fiction... will add to my list. Also, Ira Glass from This American Life talks about the philosophy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer too. Starting to sound worth checking out?
